Doane College is a private liberal arts college in Crete, which is a city in Saline County, in the US state of Nebraska, with a population estimated at a number of more than 6000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
Doane was established in 1872 (and it is the oldest 4-year private college in the state), but was originally chartered as the Nebraska University in Fontanelle, Nebraska, in 1855. It was moved to its present location in 1872, by the the Congregational Church, led by Thomas Doane, chief civil engineer of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad.
The college currently offers its students a total of 40 undergraduate majors, including 7 pre-professional programs and 3 graduate programs (management, counseling and education).
Doane's athletic teams are known as the Tigers and they compete in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are orange and black.
Among the noteworthy graduates from Doane, there are also: Douglas L. Wilson - Two-time recipient of the Lincoln Prize and Professor Emeritus at Knox College, Zenon C.R.
